We all have patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving. In IFS, we refer to these patterns as "parts" of ourselves. For example, I have a helper part and a protective part. EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and is a tool used for trauma counseling. Often, I explain that EMDR mimics REM sleep to help our brains process information. This can be done using eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation (BLS) such as tapping. For more information on EMDR, click here:
Polyvagal Theory is based on some of the latest research on the human nervous system. Most of my clients enjoy and report benefits from mapping their unique nervous system responses through then lens of Polyvagal Theory as part of their counseling experience. No doubt, the book I recommend most is by Henry Cloud and John Townsend. Boundaries is written from a biblical perspective and helps us to truly understand what is our responsibility in our relationships, including the limits we set. Henry Cloud also has a wonderful subscription resource with articles, videos, and workshops called boundaries.me.
Many people coming into therapy often don't realize that their symptoms and struggles are related to trauma. I often hear clients say things like "I don't have any trauma" or "he/she never hit me" or "I had a perfect childhood."
